Description
Great Uncle Jack would be proud of this modern day, Barossa Shiraz. A full-bodied wine with uplifting aromatics, rich dark fruit flavours and classy oak characters resulting in a generous, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.
Growing Season
Vintage 2024 was excellent. Winter and Spring were drier and slightly warmer than average leading to earlier budburst, flowering and veraison. Summer welcomed refreshing rainfall, average temperatures, with no extreme heat, ensuring the vines flourished with their very balanced crop load and apt canopy leading to steady ripening. Autumn began warm and finished mildly, continuing the consistent ripening of grapes until harvest was finished in mid-Autumn. The yields are overall average, and the quality is superb.
Vineyard
Nietschke Jack is grown and made in Australia’s premier wine region, the Barossa Valley. Grapes are sourced from a diversity of sites across the North-Western Barossa, including the renowned Greenock sub-region where vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested in numerous batches from late-February to late-March. Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed, and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for eighteen months. Both seasoned and new American and French oak was used.
Tasting Notes
Nietschke 2024 Jack Shiraz is bright magenta in colour.
It is bright, lifted and enticing with aromas of berry compote, rose florals, sweet spice, and cedary oak.
The palate is equally bright with rich red and black fruits. It is full-bodied with generous Shiraz flavours throughout. There is evident oak, slightly toasty, adding integrated complexity. Tannins are slight, adding structure and complementing the plush fruit. It has a long finish, completing this very enjoyable Barossa Shiraz. Nietschke Jack is a fine Barossa Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.
