Growing Season
The 2018 vintage was superb.  Winter was slightly wetter than average getting the vines off to a brilliant start leading them into Spring which was warmer and drier than average.  Rain in early December refreshed the vines and ensured they remained strong and healthy for the overall dry and hot Summer.  Autumn also remained dry with perfect Autumnal temperatures leading into harvest.  The 2018 yields are good and the quality is excellent, a classic Barossa vintage.

Vineyard
Nietschke Harry GSM utilises select Grenache (39%), Shiraz (36%) and Mataro (25%) blocks across the North Western Barossa, including many old vines, to make this classic Barossa blend.  Soil is shallow, sandy loam over superb deep red clay

Winemaking
The Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro grapes were harvested in numerous lots from early March to late April.  Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for a year. Only seasoned French and American barrels were used to preserve the bright fruit characters.

Tasting Notes
2018 Nietschke Harry GSM is bright red-purple in colour. The aromatics are super bright.  It’s bursting with raspberry, red cherry, rose florals, cola, musk and a hint of mint. The palate is of medium body and intensely juicy.  It oozes bright, luscious Grenache fruit.  This is followed by depth from the muscular Shiraz and a welcome savoury aspect from the Mataro.  The fresh red fruits are complimented with a lovely fine tannin frame.  The length on this wine is significant, completing a beautifully balanced and engaging wine.  Nietschke Harry GSM is best enjoyed now or over the next 5 years.
