Description
Great Uncle Jack would be proud of this modern day, Barossa Shiraz. A full-bodied wine with uplifting aromatics, rich dark fruit flavours and classy oak characters resulting in a generous, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.
Growing Season
The 2022 vintage was excellent. Winter was significantly wetter than average getting the vines off to a brilliant start leading into Spring which was cool with median rainfall. Summer was mild and dry apart from rain on the last day. Autumn remained mild with generally perfect mid-20s weather combined with cool nights ensuring steady even ripening across all varieties. The 2022 yields were good, and the quality is great, a classic Barossa vintage displaying rich flavours with fine balance.
Vineyard
Nietschke Jack is grown and made in Australia’s premier wine region, the Barossa Valley. Grapes are sourced from a diversity of sites across the North-Western Barossa, including the renowned Greenock sub-region where vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for Shiraz.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested in numerous batches from mid-March to mid-April. Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed, and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for eighteen months. Both seasoned and new American and French oak was used.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Nietschke Jack Shiraz exhibits a striking deep purple hue.
Its aromatic profile is abundant, featuring vibrant, ripe black fruits taking the lead, accompanied by notes of red liquorice, hints of cinnamon toast, and a subtle infusion of chocolaty oak. Undeniably inviting.
On the palate, it immediately reveals its richness and full-bodied character. It delivers a luscious blend of dark fruit flavors, skillfully balanced by a precise undercurrent of lively acidity, which imparts a sense of freshness. The tannins, while present, are gentle and seamlessly integrated, contributing to an elegant structure. The immaculate fruit notes are gracefully complemented by nuanced oak influences, culminating in a prolonged, satisfying finish.
Nietschke Jack is a fine Barossa Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.
