Great Uncle Jack would be proud, as this is a modern Shiraz with a twist. There’s a little something extra with a dash of Petite Sirah added for complexity. A full-bodied Barossa Shiraz with rich dark fruit flavours and classy oak characteristics that will cellar gracefully in the medium termGrowing Season
The 2018 vintage was superb. Winter was slightly wetter than average getting the vines off to a brilliant start leading them into Spring which was warmer and drier than average. Rain in early December refreshed the vines and ensured they remained strong and healthy for the overall dry and hot Summer. Autumn also remained dry with perfect Autumnal temperatures leading into harvest. The 2018 yields are good and the quality is excellent, a classic Barossa vintage.
Nietschke is a modern Shiraz with a twist. There’s a little something extra with a dash of Petite Sirah blended in for added complexity. All grapes are from the Barossa Valley including the renowned Greenock sub-region where vines are low-yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for these varieties.
The grapes were harvested in numerous batches from mid March to early April. Following fermentation for 7 to 10 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for a year. Both seasoned and new American and French oak was used.
Nietschke 2018 Shiraz is deep red in colour with purple hues.
It is very uplifting with inviting aromas of chocolate cake, plum jam, cinnamon spice, roses and a hint of toasty mocha oak.
The palate is full-bodied with rich dark fruits. It is generous, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced. Along with red and black fruits are subtle oak barrel notes giving complexity and dimension. Tannins are mild and well-integrated adding structure without obtrusion. A lengthy finish completes this wine. Nietschke is a fine Barossa Shiraz that will cellar gracefully in the medium term.
